Extreme Weather Events

 

 Long before we experience protracted, detectable heat waves from global warming, we will see more violent weather  -- altered drought and rainfall patterns, more intense storms, more temperature extremes and more intense and severe downpours. These impacts are documented in a number of peer-reviewed studies, including: "Climate change leads to more severe weather," (Science, Sept. 2000), "Trends in U.S. Climate during the Twentieth Century," (Consequences, Spring, 1995, and "The Coming Climate," (Scientific American, May, 1997, as well as in a report by the World Water Council (2003), among others.

 

As of mid-2012, extreme weather events have become so common -- the "new normal" to quote the Secretary-General of the UN -- that we have stopped posting every notable event on the website's "Weather" page -- and will be limiting ourselves to fewer extraordinary events.
