In an interview with the Concord, N.H. Monitor on Aug. 18, 2011,. Texas Governor and Republican Presidential Candidate told the paper:: "I think there are a substantial number of climate scientists who have manipulated data in favor of global warming so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects. . . I don't . . . want America to be engaged in spending that much money on a scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question."
Three days later, one of the objects of Perry's allegations, Dr. Michael Mann, was cleared by the Inspector General's office of the National Science Foundation which found "no research misconduct" on Mann's part. The Inspector General concluded that the case was closed.
